The Marigold Express Returns to St. Albans
“The Marigold Express” train, also known as the “2700 Jr.” has returned to St. Albans thanks to the efforts of Margaret Bassitt, sister of the late Eddie Bassitt, former mayor of St. Albans. The train was built by a vocational and technical class at Ben Franklin Center under the supervision of C. E. “Stubby” Gober, a St. Albans resident. The engine, tender, two passenger cars and caboose can provide a fun ride for as many as twelve children at a time. The small train provided rides for children at the State Fair in Fairlea, WV for a number of years. Upon its retirement, then Mayor Bassitt procured the “2700 Jr.” and brought it to St. Albans where it continued service in various parades and events. The train has been in storage at Coonskin Park until its recent trek back home. The St. Albans Partnership has adopted the “Marigold Express” and will be leading efforts to secure funding and volunteers to restore this piece of our history back to its original glory. Mr. Bob Lewis of St. Albans is generously providing storage and technical support for this effort. For additional photos and information on how you can help in this effort, please contact us.
